Another recipe to reproduce (which I think is due to the same bug) is:

1. maximize the LyX window
2. open advanced find pane.
3. enter "a" into find and "b" into replace.
4. press ctrl + meta + <right> to make the window take up the right-half
   of the screen.

The find and replace areas turn black for me.
