Debian provides both gcc 2.95.4 and gcc 3.01pre, I think it also
provides libraries of 2.96

It is probably better to use 2.95 since the transition to 3.0 wasn't
fully done and they use a pre grade compiler as 3.01pre-something and
not an official final version.
