I was told once over lyx-users that PNG is handled better than PDF.
Besides converting to PDF will require an extra step, and I'm not sure
that netpbm can do PDFs at all.
I'm doing whatever is sufficient, if converting to PDF is better I'll
check what I can do to improve my conversion practice. Currently it is
hardcoded to be EPS for latex and PNG for pdflatex.
