I don't understand why you can't have an uncollapsed inserERT (with only one
row) have its with according to the text inside, so it will be displayed
inline:

          +---+-----------+
Some text |ERT|\somelatex | some more regular text.
          +---+-----------+

This would also be useful for short footnotes.
