You can bind this f***ing LFUN to whatever key you want - including
C-<space> - in your personal math.bind.

_I_ cannot do so since it conflicts with the binding for
LFUN_PROTECTED_SPACE.

Since \vec{vv} is perfectly legal input (even if I don't know why someone
would use it) it has to be a inset that might contain anything. Once it
is one, it gets "insetish" behaviour. That's life.

You could always define a macro  \newcommand{\v}{\vec{v}} that behaves
exactly like you want. But that's a personal preference and I don't see a
compelling reason to sacrifies greater flexibility for such.
