Actually \textrm{öäåÖÄÅ} (or any other textXX) does work, and render
correctly, in LaTeX. Only inserting this stuff through LyX is tricky:

- LyX 1.1.5 ("old" lyx): You can type \textrm{äöä (the '}' is added) and
  LaTeX rendering works.
- LyX 1.2.0cvs: The above does not work. You can type however 
  \textrm{ (which collapses and enters textrm mode) and the \"a, \"o
  etc. which will remain visible as such (could they be made
  collapsible?). In LaTeX these render as *accented* letters as 
  intended, not second derivatives :-)

Do we really need an easier user interface for this? It would not be
hard to add to mathed, but would this perhaps cross the line to
silliness? I could imagine the Å(ngstöm) getting some use, though...
(BTW what about a "units" panel? cm, kg, m^3, lb in^{-2}, what not ;-)
