Didn't Andr� post a pipestream class to the list some time ago? These sort of semantic differences should be encapsulated and hidden away. If I'm imagining this posting, then a quick google search throws up socket++ http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/lavender/courses/socket++/ which may, of course, be overkill! Angus
