bar "|" doesn't work in Qt

In the Qt version, when I hit "|" (the pipe or the vertical bar obtained
by hitting Shift and "\") I see "unknown function" at the bottom.. and
of course, the bar isn't displayed.. same thing happens in math mode
also..
