This is no worse than the current situation, or the proposed 3-state button:
In the 3-state button suggestion, the default is to use validate, so if the
user defines a macro with a name the same as ams macro, he will get an error,
so he need to go the the document dialog and disable 'use amsmath'.
This is exactly what happens  with my suggestion.
