                On Unix/Linux with Xft-disabled builds (i.e.,
with X11core fonts), you should install the Type1
TeX fonts and Mathematica 4.1 fonts (repeat: 4.1)
in PFA and PCF formats. C.f. these instructions.

Our lib/configure stuff merely makes symbolic links to these fonts
anyway. I never really understood the purpose. Would it not be
better/more robust to tell people how to configure their XServer to
find the fonts in the first place.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think it would be better if a
little dialog popped up with:

Mathed can use the TeX fonts that I've found in
        /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/fonts/type1/bluesky/cm
but to do so, you must tell X11 where to find them.

        Here's how to do so...
                                                [ Close ]

Moreover, if the fonts aren't present in the TeX tree, then we can
modify the story above to tell 'em where to find 'em and how to
install 'em.

This solution is better than the current one because the current
solution just does not work if I'm running LyX remotely or if the
fonts aren't present.

On Linux with Xft-enabled builds, you should
install the TrueType TeX fonts and Mathematica
                4.1 fonts (repeat: 4.1). C.f. these instructions.

Same idea. A dialog telling users what to do is more useful here than
doing it for them.
