In text2.C, function updateCounters, you have two version of the function. The first one, inside #if 0, is the original non recursive one, which does use the DocIterator parameter. This one is fast but does not update in insets.
The other one after the #else ignores the DocIterator and goes through the whole document. This one is much slower but mostly works.

Yes, but that wasn't my question. :-) I just wanted to know if I'm just too
stupid to produce the delay or if PowerPC is genuinely faster.
Now that's settled I'd like to know your compiler settings, so I can try
to compile a proper slow LyX version for me ;-)
