No, in 1.3, it has been correctly converted to $a$ foo $b$ because everything without $-delimters has been regarded as math-TEXT. But I guess this is the price to pay for the freedom of using delimiters or not. However, it seems to me that at least $a$ $foo$ $b$ would be more sensible. However, I agree that we could live with this minor glitch in 1.4.0 Jürgen
