I am not sure why you are all harping on that. Competition is not
great. Diversity is.

If you want to go through the competition route, we will soon have a
WTO-like body telling us that, to enforce free competition, it will
not be allowed to mention gcc in the main README file (because it is
unfair to msvc); of course, having an INSTALL file mentioning
./configure is not permissible either. And mentioning both autoconf
and scons in the INSTALL file is not good since one will be presented
before the other and have unfair advantage. So it will be required to
have a INSTALL.autoconf and a INSTALL.scons file (of same length) that
present fairly and nevertheless separately the two competing systems.

In France we used to be able to dial 12 to find out the phone number
of somebody. It is not a very exciting service, but it worked. Now it
has been decided that competition is essential in this domain, so we
have 14 (?) different 118 xxx numbers that offer this service (and
more exciting things nobody ever asked for) at various opaque prices.
And of course, if you cannot remember the number you need to call (was
it 118 818 or 118 218?), it is not allowed to print this number on
phone booths (unfair) or to give a list of those services (would be
unfair to the services who did advertisements; the other would get
calls at no effort).

As you can see, competition is not always progress. But cooperation is.
