Asger posted some code last June that would enable you to write a wrapper for
Acrobat that would obviate the problem. See:

That is for acrobat reader only, and under windows only. Using
different temp files will solve the problem for all potential viewers,
under all OSs.
I believe the problem doesn't exit in most of the other cases.
There is no such problem on linux - where it simply isn't
possible to lock a file like that. So acrobat on linux doesn't
lock the file, and neither do the other linux pdf viewers.
(Of course acrobat on linux still doesn't react well to the file
being changed while acrobat have it open, so I use xpdf instead.
There is no 64-bit acroread anyway.)

Other readers doesn't do this stupid, counterproductive and
unnecessary locking either. Using the same file with these other
viewers (xpdf, xdvi etc.) is instead an advantage:

If several files was used, then I'd get several pdf/dvi windows which
I certainly don't want. Instead, when the single file changes,
the view changes automatically when I click on that window.

Do you really want more and more acrobat windows cluttering your
screen each time you do a new preview?
