By, the way... most of the optimisation I did are common to all
frontends so gtk should also benefit from that.

I am also interested in this to see what low hanging fruits I may find
for 1.4.
The one think that made scrolling much faster in qt4 is the patch that
avoided sending Qt signal two or more times each time the scrollbar is
touched. I am not sure this is fixed correctly for qt3 in trunk.
