I corrected now the UserGuide sections 1-5. The following mail consist of corrections that I didn't
apply or where I have questions:
1.2 How LyX looks:
First paragraph: second half
The mini-buffer appears in response to Alt-X but it does not appear by default.
The minibuffer was standard until LyX 1.5.0 since then it only appears when you explicitly want to
have it because it is an expert tool. I therefore removed this old relict now.
2.1 Basic file operations:
In the list of operations
Open Recent
Save all
Fax
New window
Close window
are missing
Because the section is about the "basic" operations only. The other ones are in detail described in
the appendix.
3.3.6.2 Itemize
Remove the sentence: 'Note that those of you reading this manual within LyX
won't see any difference.' just over half way through because there is a
difference even within LyX
I can really see no difference within LyX: all three items in the list the sentence is about have
the same symbol "-". So this sentence is correct.
3.4.1
First paragraph:
. . . blocks that inherit . . . list inside another list . . .
first part now fixed, second part is correct because the lists are only an
example of blocks.
3.8.3 Previewing
Final sentence
To save the output, export your document.
(In fact, I never use export; I just use 'Save as' in the viewer - would it be
worth adding that as an option?)
By using Save as, you don't get any output: You only save your LyX document under another name but
don generate a PDF.
5 Mathematical Formulas
Just a general point: the use of the singular 'math' is US; in most other
English speaking countries the plural 'maths' is used in exactly the same way.
Though LyX has used the US term 'math' in things like 'Math panel', I don't
think it would be necessary to change the screen interface if you did decide to
make this change.
(Both dialog and program were originally US spellings but are widely accepted
in computing environments (use dialogue and programme outside computing); math
is a more general term and so not widely used in English speaking countries
outside the US).
The UserGuide was originally written by someone from the US. Due to this fact and the fact that in
the software business US English is the standard I try to us US English. I just noticed that the LyX
term "greyed-out" is UK English, should I change it (in LyX and the documentation) to "grayed-out"
to be consistent?
5.3 Grouping
I have never used the grouping macro to produce the results suggested here even
though I have studied maths to second year undergraduate level. So there is a
subtlety here which escapes me. Perhaps this sub-section should go in the main
Math manual rather than in this manual.
I removed this section now, because nobody typesets a formula like this. (x^y)^z is either written
as such but in 99% as x^(y*z) and expert issues like this are covered by the Math manual.
5.7.2 Math Text
I have always used Ctl+m while in math mode to enter text mode; Alt M M results
in 'Unknown command'. Should it be (shortcut Ctl+m)?
The shortcut is Alt+M M (note the "+") and work correctly here. Ctrl+M inserts the command \mbox
which is not equal to the desired command \textrm. That Ctrl+M does not insert another $$ pair is
btw. a bug in LyX and not easy to solve.
I'll do the other corrections the next days.
Many thanks again for your time you spent to find all these issues.
best regards Uwe
