For your inlined equations: make sure that you did not type <Return>
before the equation. An inlined equation should be part of the *same*
paragraph as the text, unless you really mean to change paragraph.

For the vertical spacing between items, try playing with
  \setlength{\itemsep}{0.1cm} % or whatever value you like
in the preamble.
