use the ones with a star, they are the same without star
but not numbered.

i answerde this with  the last message.

-title-

-contents-
-introduction-

\mainmatter
-the main text-
...
\backmatter
-appendix-
-bib-
-index-
...

with this structure some things (e.g. pagenumbering) looks better. 
choose chapter* for your introduction, than you have by
default a new page.
