umlauts in formula

Hello,

is there anybody at this list who figured out how
to use "umlauts" in a formula
(description-enviroment) !
I've tried:

1. writing it exactly as ä
2. using "a instead of ä (the LaTex way)

In case of 1 the letter isn't displayed at all, in
case of 2 an a is displayed. After reading the
internationalization docs again I can not figure
out a further possibility to make the umlauts work
in this enviroment.
Any hint is appreciated !
