Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it out (both, upgrading to the 
lyx-1.1.6fix1-40.i386.rpm and copying the (unzipped of course) lyx.mo to
/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES (where the original one was).
Unfortunately, both did not solve my problem.

I also checked whether it might have to do with KDE <-> xforms
incompatibility, but also a different window manager did not change the
problem.

running  'lyx -dbg 4' and pressing Alt-H for the Help menu resulted in
