This should normally not be necessary, simply typing \textrm should
work...

It should work the way you did it. But to make a more educated guess on
what exactly is going wrong it would help a lot if you told us the version
of LyX you are using.
And maybe how the saved .lyx file looks like. Does it contain the \textrm?
