problem solved...

You can't create a document with just a title. If you add author and 
institution it works fine.

However I have another problem now :)

View->dvi gives no errors but also shows nothing. What I mean is that 
the pages are completely blank.  View->postscript on the other hand 
works just fine.

I don't know if this is a function of the versions of software I am 
using.  They are the standard ones from redhat 7.3 (I have applied all 
the standard updates).
