You have to have Edit/Preferences/Outputs/LaTeX/TeX encoding set
to T1 to make it work (and either have cm-super fonts installed
or use Layout/Document/Layout/Font & Size set to "ae" or
"pslatex".

Thanks very much! I had the encoding set set to T1 but I would never
have worked out that I had to set Font and Size to ae or pslatex. All
I need to do is to work out how to stop lyx calling dvips with "-t a4"
and I will be happy :)
