Are there any good non-WYSIWYM editors for Linux or esp. MAC to run LaTex on. I use WinEdt (with Miktex) on my wintel box and just installed LyX.
Incidentally, given that I just installed tex/latex on my MAC (using i-installer) to use w/LyX, is it correct to assume that this installation would suffice in order to run any future, say non-wysiwym editors, that I might install? That is, is it true that i-install is not just a way of getting tex/latex for LyX, but also for any front-end editor you might want to use? -----Original Message----- From: pano karambelas [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 6:55 PM To: lyx-users@lists.lyx.org Subject: RE: MAC OS X Chris & everyone else - Thanks. The installations went smoothly. One thing that puzzles me is the dvi button. The various pdf buttons on my lyx installation produce pdf files, but the dvi button doesn't seem to do very much, haven't figured out what this means yet. Regarding Latex2e, I didn't realize that there was anything (other than perhaps beta developments) beyond that; in fact, I do believe 2e is the latest. Regarding Tex versions, I recall the version # approaches that of pi at this point (ie, --> 3.1, 3.14, etc), although I'm too lazy to check right now; just got home from work ;) Still experimenting with Lyx. For example, I was able to import at tex document as described in the instructions that was originally produced via MikTex and it converted to lyx format without a hitch. However, one thing I'd like to do is the following: quite often, I receive latex code in the form of an email, ie, *not* as an attached .tex file (which would be imported as described in the previous paragraph), but as text in an email. I've usually pop such stuff into WinEdt hit the button and it would produce a nice doc. Last night I wasn't able to succeed in doing that with LyX. I was using Latex code (copy/pasted from an email) which was of moderate size (probably produce about 10 pages of pdf) and pasted this to LyX but ended up with errors in latex syntax. Incidentally, I put LyX into Tex mode, I believe this is the mode that allows you to type LaTex code directly. Again the same code imported and converted without incident as a latex import, as described above. I'm sure it's doable, but haven't figured it out yet. I have plenty of documents I want to convert and it would be easier to plop the code in and go rather than save them first as .tex and do the import. Any ideas? -----Original Message----- From: Chris Menzel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 1:40 PM To: pano karambelas Cc: lyx-users@lists.lyx.org Subject: Re: MAC OS X On Sun, Apr 17, 2005 at 01:20:59PM -0400, pano karambelas wrote: > Maybe I'm asking the question incorrectly but after the installation of > tex (via i-install as described) & lyx, will I be able to use Latex code Of course. I don't know of an installation of TeX that doesn't include the LaTeX environment. > If yes, I assume it's Latex2-e. You can install TeX 2.02 or TeX 3.0. I believe the version of LaTeX that comes with TeX 3.0 is called LaTeX 3.0 and supersedes LaTeX2e, but I must admit I'm not sure of the fine points here. I've had no problems at all with TeX 3.0 on any platform, including OS X. Chris Menzel
