How about setting a smaller font (edit->text style) and
then use the square?

Another suggestion. Put the following newcommand into an ERT box (TEX on 
the top menubar).

\newcommand{\sqbullet}{\vrule height .9ex width .8ex depth -.1ex }  % 
square bullet

Then in a maths box type \sqbullet
