LyX has a word count feature; at worst, export to ASCII text and run it through wc.
But I guess they integrated a word count / edited word count into their billing system (they are charging 0.13 South African Rand per edited word) so they are doing they accounting based on word doc...
That's a potential conflict of interest. If the language lab lives off user charges, they have a vested interest in making many changes. You can correct typographical mis-spellings within LyX and do a visual check for grammar, missing punctuation, etc.
Well - I am fed up with fighting them - they will not get my money and I will send it to another proofreader.
