I wouldn't strongly discourage using a devel version for such an important
project. I fact, I was myself rather over-careful and waited for *.1 or *.2
version before I used a new major release for my thesis (which is to say, I
kept the old stable version in parallel).
I might add, if you are not ready to (or not able to) use the svn
version, then forget about it. Things are slowly stabilizing but beta3
is already very old in terms of fixed bugs. I personally use the svn
version when I need to write something but I know what I am doing. If
you are writing stuff with other people, stick with 1.5.x I'd say.
