Really, how does one use that particular LFun (LFUN_WORD_REPLACE) at all?
Under what circumstances *could* it be used if not in the minibuffer or in a
command sequence?

To elaborate a bit, the LFUNs are in principle for internal use. That is, to communicate between the frontend (dialogs, menus) and the LyX core. The LFUN_WORD_REPLACE is used by the Find & Replace dialog to send the query to the core.

I guess that the design of the parameters of this LFUN is made like this, because the newline is one thing you can't enter in the Find & Replace dialog, and you can thus split the find and replace strings from each other. However, the fact that you can't enter this in the Find & Replace dialog is, also means that you can't enter it in the command buffer.
