Oh, sorry--forgot to mention that this "sticky formatting" persists
even when cutting and pasting or copying objects between cells. As in,
select an italicized letter, cut it, paste it to another cell, and
then try to type in a different cell--the text will be in italics.
This doesn't happen outside of tables.

(Hence the subject of the thread.)
