Yes I am on XP Home.  For some reason I have been forgetting to specify this in 
this thread. 

I simply installed ASPELL and ran a reconfigure.  Spell checker seems to be 
working now.

Do you think that I should reinstall anyway in case I am missing some 
functionality that I have not noticed is missing?

I have noticed that I seem to be missing the phvr8t font when I try to output a 
tufte-book document to dvi although the document exports to pdf with no problem 
and I am not clear if this could be an installation problem or just a tufte- 
book peculiarity as tufte seems to be in flux at the moment.
