The long help is needed because the man page is generated from it. Maybe txt2man? It would be nice, but help2man breaks the format of the table in the man page: Maybe you could fix it. If a tool isn't working then user can fix it. After all, it's free and open source. scdoc[1] could be an alternative to help2man worth considering, it wouldn't have these problems I believe. Or this. It seems simple enough. Not as simple, or rather as convenient as help2man, but still.
