I second that it's probably the memory battery. I had the same behavior until I replaced the battery with a "super capacitor". The capacitor charges pretty much instantly whenever I swap the AAs. I bought a bag of 10 capacitors that claim to be 2.7V 3.3F for less than $10. They definitely have more capacitance than any of my meters can directly read. Now y'all have got me curious what they really are? I guess today's project is going to be measuring capacitance the fun way.
