Hi Claudia,
I have a Nexus 4, but it's all Kit Kat. Your friend should go to one of
the home screens, open 'apps' and open the 'messaging' app. That will start
with a screen with a list of 'conversations'. He should find the person
he's interested in an double-tap it to open the list of messages.

Once he's comfortable with that, there is an alternative. If a message
comes in, it shows up as an alert. Just do a 2-finger swipe from the top of
the screen to open the status tray. Scroll down to the message alert and
double-tap it - That will open the messaging app and the conversation.

Hope that helps,

Brian.

He does not know how to check his voice mail, get to his messages and read
through them, if he misses them, through the Bluetooth. He does not have
MA; he was trying to use Talkback exclusively.

I have the nexus5 running talkback, what do you want to know? I have not
used MA's screen reader or apps sense 4.1.2 on my former galaxy S3.
