Best is a relative term, but if you're looking for a full featured
database program with an accessible gui, then you'll want to invest
in bento.
If gui isn't important to you, then mysql is free, and works
perfectly. Of course, it takes quite a bit of typing, unless you can
design your own interfaces via some other method, but those usually
require a web server, and php, javascript, perl, or something
similar, so that probably isn't the best option for someone just
starting out.
