Text edit works just fine 90 percent of the time for reading word
documents. You don't need to spend the money for the completely
inaccessible version of microsoft's office for the mac. You can also
try open office, though it has it's quirks, it does work after a
fashion, but definitely not something I'd recomend to an osx/vo
beginner.
Just use text edit, and I think you'll find that most of the time it
will do the job for you.
