OK let's see what can be done here.

you say that when you try to make system changes and need to lock or unlock and 
it asks for a password. stupid question but did you try just hitting enter on 
the password. there's a chance there's no password but it always asks for one 
as normal, no matter whether you log in or anything else. if your system wasn't 
set up with a password then you are ok. if there is a system password, then 
it's time to break out the big guns...
