I think it may depend   on how old the IMac keyboard is.
I know the the older model Apple keyboards are definitely not compatible with 
the I-Phone as the one I bought as a replacement came with the warning that it 
was not compatible with an I Pod or I Phone.

Technically I think the keyboard needs to be HID compliant to work with the I 
Phone.
I think the older keyboards are not HID. I forget the acronym but they are 
something like STC protocol. This works fine on the Mac but not the I Phone.
If you have a modern HID keyboard then of course none of this applies.
