I've only done this once so I might make a mistake or two in telling
you what to do here but I'll give it a try.

Go into system preferences under hardware and look for bluetooth
settings. In there, you should find something to look for available
devices; this will work much the same way as pairing up a bluetooth
keyboard. Once you see the track pad listed and press the button to
pair the device, following the spoken instructions. I think you are
asked to press down on the track pad so it will make the physical
click. Of course, the track pad has to be turned during this drill.
If you are doing this on a Mac mini and you don't have any other
pointing devices connected to it, The machine will most definitely
tell you if the track pad is missing (turned off). But once paired up
and all that, you should be able to move your finger around on the pad
to see if you get any responses. that's about all you can do to tell
if it is connected.

Hope this helps.
