Ah, this is actually a feature of Lion.  If you don't edit a document for a few 
days, it will make it read-only on next open.  In textedit as soon as you 
attempt to edit one of these files you get a message like:
The file “Jonathan Cohn Resume April 2012.docx” is locked because you haven’t 
made any changes to it recently.
The dialog box has three buttons, unlock, cancel, and duplicate.

The Duplicate is the default.  Note: it is highly recommended that you do a 
save after doing a duplicate so that the duplicated file has auto-saves going 
to a well known file.
