So what I did was, on the PC in windows 7, remove all the files from
the flash drive, format it, return the files, use eject to release
the drive, and then take it back to the Mac. which saw it just
fine. then I had to remember to use eject before removing it from the Mac.
This transition thing is totally awful! thanks for the help.
