Hi Paul,

        I wonder if your friends problem is anything like my recent crash where 
voice over only worked in the finder.  Not sure why but re starting with the p, 
R, Command, and Option keys got mine up and working again.  I held the keys 
down during the start up and waited until I heard the chime three times.  then 
lifted my hands away and it was happy again.

Did you find a solution to this problem yet?
