Hello Dónal,

We've had similar problems with a similar setup. Here's what we did:
1) Change the channel from the default of 11 to the new value of 13 using the 
Airport Utility.
2) Activate the 802.11n (5GHz) network on both devices and use drag&drop in the 
Network pane of System Preferences to make that the preferred network.

It's been rock solid since we did this.
