Hello Carol,

Often, when you're not allowed to shut down or quit an application, it's
because there's a dialogue box open. Use the Window chooser (VO-F2-F2) to see
what's there.

Have you looked for someone to give you some basic Mac and VoiceOver training?
It might help you get up and running. I can't help you with that because I'm in
France and all my basic teaching materials are in French. I also only teach Mac
beginners face to face rather than on the phone or via Skype. But I'm sure
there must be someone who can help you get familiar with your Mac.

Cheers,

Anne
