Hello Paul, A search of the Apple Discussion forums brought up the suggestion that you change the network adapter settings from "Share with my Mac" to "Autodetect". Apparently this solves the network connection issues under VMWare 5.03 running under Mavericks for many people. However, there are also reports that some VM systems are running with higher CPU usage and fans coming on compared to the same systems running under version 6. These reports seem to vary, so just monitor your own performance specs for your Mac.
