Hi Mary and Eileen,

The Hamrick Vuescan site claims that the Plustek OpticBook 3600 is supported on
Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and later, if you first install the Plustek drivers. It
also says that you might have to use the x32 version of Vuescan with this
scanner. This suggests to me that the drivers Eileen found for 10.7 and above
might get this device working, but that it wouldn't apply to Snow Leopard
systems (Mac OS X 10.6) like the one you were running. It also suggests to me
that the drivers might have been written for machines that natively run a
32-bit kernel (essentially, all older Mac models), and that since all recent
Macs, including Eileen's MacBook Air, boot into 64-bit systems by default, and
since this is enforced by all systems running Mountain Lion and above, this
might be why she isn't seeing the device.

I think that the option of booting into 32-bit mode went away in Mountain Lion
and above. There's an Apple Knowledge base article on booting into either
64-bit or 32-bit mode, but it's now marked as archived. Here's the link:
• Archived - OS X: Starting up with the 32-bit or 64-bit kernel
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3773

This has left me puzzled, because I don't see a way to install the drivers on
the new MacBook Airs that ship with the newer operating systems. Maybe Hamrick
means this might work on upgraded operating systems that managed to install the
drivers under Lion or earlier? Might be worth asking the VueScan folks directly
if this is at all possible on a recent MacBook Air.

Eileen, I haven't tried Prizmo 2 on the Mac (although I did have version 1,
which I didn't like), but I think that Anne and some others prefer ABBYY
FineReader Express over Prizmo 2. ABBYY is currently on sale at the Mac App
Store for half price ($49.99) for Thanksgiving. I know Prizmo 2 is much better
than Prizmo 1, but you seem to be a serious scanner, so I thought I would
mention the ABBYY option while it's still active this weekend.

Cheers,

Esther
