Hi there!
This setting is in the keyboard section of your system preferences.
And, you don’t *have* to change this, it’s mostly personal preference.
With this setting, one way makes it so you can adjust screen brightness, etc, 
with the function keys.  If you leave it that way, you’ll have to also push the 
fn key to get the other functions of the function keys.  I honestly can’t 
remember whether that’s the software option or the hardware option, it’s been 
awhile since I’ve set this myself.

If you need more help, just ask.  I just got a mac book air myself for 
Christmas.
