Perhaps it would be worth the wile waiting to see what the status messages and 
progress reports for Super Duper on the chap's computer actually say before 
trying to do any further troubleshooting, could be a whole range of issues here 
and you've put your finger on another, Super Duper and Time Machine both 
backing up to the same drive at the one time, with a USB 3.0 drive this isn't a 
huge issue - that's what I do here myself - but with anything slower it could 
be a right pain in the bum.
