I went to system preferences and zoom but there was nothing for me to
change. It just said image zoom. Do I have to go in to the mouse settings
to put zoom on?

Turn on magnification with Command+option+8. Once mag is on, Increase and
decrease magnification with command+option+ equals sign (=), and minus sign
(-) respectively.
First, make sure magnification (zoom) is enabled in accessibility options in
system preferences. There are setting there for how the screen reacts to
mouse and cursor movement etc.
