I've got a regular polli-carbon macbook, and though I do have the issue,
yes, it's nowhere near as severe. But then again, that's the mac I use for
my audio production, and there really isn't a whole lot on it aside
ProTools, and maybe a few other audio RTass plugins like Ivery, Piano Tech 4
Stage, Auto-Tune, a few Isotope plugins, all the waves plugins, Main Stage
3, all the Garageband Jampacks, and Toast Titanium Pro for burning CD/DVD's.
So yeah, not very much, so yeah, probably not a fair evaluation in my case.
That system on Mavericks however takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 to
4 minutes to boot. Still quite slow, but definitely way way better than my
other two macs, as well as my mom's mac mini which basically may as well be
just barebone Mavericks with no software at all. She's got a few things on
it non-OS preloaded, but when I say a few, I mean! a few. She's got Super
Dooper, MS Office, ugg! IWorks, YoruFukurou, although she literally never
uses it. she probably doesn't even remember installing it. She's got
Dropbox, but same as YoruFukurou. That's about it. Her's takes probably
about 6 or 7 minutes to boot. So, again, better than my systems, but still,
by far, not great.

Have you tried a full reinstall of mavericks/ I did and although
slow, I do see a slight speed increase.
