To be able to access folders on the dock you need to bring up the context
menu shift vo M on the item and make sure that the option to view as both
list and folder are checked. You need to have both checked for this to
work.
From memory one is show as and the other is view by. but However if you
investigate you will find the list and folder options in the context menu.
Once you have both folder and list checked you will then have the folder
displaying as a cascade menu a bit similar to an old XP Windows start
menu
cascade.
Whether this is useful or not depends on what you want to do with it. It
is
great for internet shortcuts but if you want to access the folder normally
it is of more limited use. If you simply want to get to the folder quickly
then it is much better to use inbuilt Mac short cuts like command shift O.

command shift o, and it will open your documents folder.
